Summary
Dress - A woman's cotton dress dating from 1880-1885. Fabric - White cotton, roller printed with fine dark green lines to give effect of watered silk. Turkey red twilled frill at hem. Lining - The drapery and frills of the skirt are constructed on a white cotton underskirt which joins the bodice at the hip and continues into the hem. Hem faced with beige twilled cotton. dark blue woollen hem binding. Cut - Princess line bodice, fastening at the back with narrow stand collar. Skirt draped round the body from hips to knee, the fullness held in place centre-front and at back with vertical lines of gauging. 2 pleated frills of self fabric below - third frill at hem of red wool. Puffed bustle (lifted up with 2 vertical tapes) with 4 pairs tape tied inside. Cotton pocket in right-hand side of bustle. Full length, fitted sleeves with deep band of ruching from elbow to wrist. Fob pocket left-hand waist. Chain machine-stitched. Piped shoulder seam narrow cotton tape reinforced behind buttons. Trimmings - Frill of 4 rows pleated muslin tacked inside waist. Fastenings - Cotton tape inside waist with brass work and worked eye steel hook and worked eye at neck. 21 buttonholes centre-back. 14 large grey pearl buttons still in place.
