Summary
Dress - A woman's silk dress dating from 1875-1880. Fabric - Silk, stripes of maroon (satin) and platinum (rib weave). Lining - Half-lined to hips with white cotton twill printed with grey stripe. Sleeve lined white glazed cotton printed with grey check. Deep hem facing of stiffened muslin. Front panel of skirt mounted onto unbleached stiffened scrim. Pleated trim at hem mounted on black stiffened muslin. Pleated satin trim on cuff backed with black cotton net. Cut - Princess style. Shaped front panel from neck to hem in plain satin. Centre-front opening to hip level, below this the satin is gauged and pleated. Close, round-neckline with narrow stand collar. Bodice boned at side seams and bust dart. Dress fits smoothly over hips. Below the hip line the centre-back panel widens with double inverted box pleat into wide ruched panel held back and looped up by 4 pairs of tapes tied inside skirt. Long, shaped, set-in sleeves with deep satin cuff (decorated with 'v' shaped area of folded satin). Small satin fob pocket on the outside of left-hand waist. Cotton pocket inside right-hand side. Trimmings - Triple frill of pleated silk gauze and lace tacked inside neck and cuff edges. Pleated cream organdie frill edged with machine made lace tacked inside hem. Fastenings - Cotton tape inside waist to join centre-front with 2 brass hooks and eyes. 18 domed self covered buttons centre-front decorated with needle-woven cross in matching silk thread. 1 brass hook and buttonhole at neck.
