Summary
Dress - A woman's silk dress dating from 1820-1825. Fabric - Sulphur yellow silk - satin bodice; skirt and sleeves of plain light silk with satin stripes. Lining - Bodice part-lined white cotton. Outer sleeve lined stiffened muslin fleece at hem. Cut - Waistline slightly raised. Bodice front cut in one piece with 'sweetheart' neckline and 2 bust darts. Centre-back opening extends into skirt. Back and bodice cut rather full. Curved neckline, the fullness eased in at neck and waist with drawstrings. Short puffed sleeves of ruched striped satin. Oversleeves of 4 'petal' shapes of stiffened satin attached at tips to sleeves. Skirt front cut straight, falling smoothly from waist, The back of the skirt is fuller, with flared seams and gathering at the waist. Slightly trained. Padded band of plain satin at hem. Bodice lining worked with satin as far as underarm back seam where it separates. Fastenings - Cream silk ribbon tie at neck - now disappeared (see Nancy Bradfield). White tape tie through waist. Bodice lining has modern ribbon tie - it was originally pinned. Cream ribbon tape tie inside left bodice front. Alterations - Traces of stitching lines 5 inches/12.7 cms and 11 inches/28 cms above hem. Comments - Bodice possibly remade - stitching and finishing poor. Could have been an underdress. Charles Wade Catalogue No.G.2 'Dress of buttercup satin with delicate stripes.' Bought from Mrs Solomon for £12.10.0d, bill dated Feb 17 1915 possibly refers. (Cross Ref.
