Summary
Dress - A woman's silk taffeta dress dating from 1836-1840. Fabric - Cream yellow silk taffeta. 18 inches/45.7 cms wide. Red stripe in selvedge. Lining - Bodice lined white cotton, some glazed. Skirt fully lined stiffened muslin. Waistband strengthened with wide linen tape. Cut - Wide curving neckline, low in front. The bodice is cut on the cross in 2 pieces with centre seam. The top is draped round the neckline with pleats that run from the shoulder, held in position with piped bands, 2 on each shoulder and 1 centre-front. Centre-back opening extends into skirt. The bodice backs cut plain. The back neck is edged with piped band of self fabric. Centre, side seams and back edges all boned. Short, narrow sleeves, set quite low, lightly padded-probably with fleece (to keep them smooth). Deep puffed band above opening. Wide, set-in waistband. Full skirt, knife pleated side and front, the pleats facing centre-front. Tightly organ pleated centre-back. Piped seams. Narrow silk ribbons stretched across inside bodice from centre-front to armhole edge. Bodice pleats held in place with stay stitching inside. Finely sewn. Trimmings - Narrow edging to neckline to blonde lace. Fastenings - Ribbon drawstring at neck. 9 pairs worked eyelets centre-back with cream silk cord with brass tags. Flattened copper hooks and eyes - 1 pair at neck, 3 pairs on waistband (1 hook replaced). Alterations - Silk on sleeves has been worked before and the skirt has been shortened and re-applied.
