Summary
Dress - A woman's silk taffeta dress dating from 1825-30. Fabric - Oyster grey silk taffeta. Hydrangea pink gauze oversleeves. Trimmed orchid pink satin ribbon and gauze. Lining Bodice back and sleeves lined with white cotton. Cut - Raised waistline. Wide square neckline. Bodice cut in 2 pieces with centre seam (hidden), the shoulder pieces cut separately. Wide central panel pleated and decorated with contrasting satin bands, narrowing towards waist, where it is tightly gathered. The taffeta folds forward at the neck, forming a frill. Centre-back opening extends into skirt. Back bodice gathered to waistband at the centre. Folded band of taffeta and gauze applied to run diagonally from shoulder to waist. Shoulder piece overlaps top of band with detached scalloped flap. Puffed sleeves gathered into satin band. Gauze 'gigot' oversleeves with narrow opening cuff. Skirt falls smoothly in front, tightly gathered centre-back. Double row of padded satin bands alternating with folded taffeta at hem. Piped seams. Amrhole seams bound inside. Trimmings Skirt trimmed above hem with applied shell-like puffs of satin ribbon and gauze. Frill of hand run lace attached inside neck edge. 3 rows of domed satin-covered buttons on bodice back, 2 on each shoulder flap. Fastenings - 4 flattened silver hooks with worked eyelets centre-back. Pale pink ribbon ties inside waist. Pink silk ribbon drawstrings through waist to tie outside of dress. Pair of silver hooks and eyes on each cuff.
