Summary
Dress - A woman's taffeta dress dating from 1825-1830. Fabric - Violet grey silk taffeta with woven tartan stripe in pink, green and cream. Lining - Bodice and sleeves lined with white cotton. Hem padded with fleece. Cut - Raised waistline. Wide curved neckline, dropped shoulder. The bodice front is cut on the bias in 2 pieces with centre seam. Bust darts. Small yoke over shoulders. Centre-back opening continues into skirt. The back bodice sections have a curved seam underarm, the centre pieces are cut full and gathered into he neck and waist. Bodice decorated with bias band of same fabric running from bow at back of the shoulder down towards centre-front, folded to make 'lapels' with points over the top of the sleeve. Criss-crossed bands of fabric-covered paper encircle the waist. Neck edge slightly padded. Set-in waistband. Gigot sleeves with tight fastening cuff decorated with cross-wise piped seam and 4 self covered buttons. Skirt has flared side-seams and is gathered all round. Padded hem. Pocket slit right-hand seam. Piped seams. Trimmings - Bow and fall of same fabric centre-back waist. Fastenings - Ribbon drawstring at neck. Cotton drawstring inside waist. Painted steel hook and worked bar at neck. 2 pairs of hooks and eyes at waist (painted steel and copper). Alterations - Skirt has been re-gathered. (Cross Ref.
