Summary
Dress - A woman's barege dress dating from 1865-1870. Fabric - Cream barege chequered with narrow stripes in ruby red line pattern with trellis of small red, green and blue flower sprays. Lining - Inner bodice and short undersleeves of white cotton. Cut - Natural waistline, Centre-front opening continuing into skirt, stepped at the waist. Close, round neck. Bodice has dropped shoulders, the front sections cut very full, gathered into the shoulder with a fold covering the armhole. The fullness is drawn towards the centre at the waist and gathered into the waistband. The back is cut in 3 sections with curved seams from armhole to waist. The centre section is full, lightly gathered along shoulder and at the waist. Inner bodice has low scoop neckline. It is seamed with the bodice at back and sides (boned) and held in place in front with a row of stitching curving from armhole beneath the bust. Loose fitting 3/4 lenght curved sleeves with wide 'v' shaped opening and ruched strip running down the outside and round edge of opening. Set-in waistband. Skirt has wide flat pleats to the front and triple box pleats at side back. Tightly organ pleated centre-back. Fob-pocket centre-front. Trimmings - Undersleeves edged narrow handmade lace. Sleeves trimmed with double row black machine lace over greeb silk ribbon. The same lace edges the sleeve openings. Neck edged with Valenciennes lace. Fastenings - 5 brass hooks with 3 brass eyes and 2 worked eyes centre-front. 1 large brass hook and worked bar and 1 steel hook and eye at waistband. Strong cotton tape inside bodice just above waist from side seam to fasten in front with 2 brass hooks and 2 steel hooks. 1 tiny green death's head button at neck.
