Summary
Dress - A woman's wool dress from early 1850's. Fabric - Fine cream wool. Printed spot pattern of pink ovals surrounded by brown dots, fabric 25 inches/63.5 cms wide. Lining - Bodice, skirt and upper sleeves lined with white cotton. Cut - Round, low waistline. Round neck. Wide draped front gathered in a centre of waist with several rows of gauging. Bodice side pieces attached only to lining fabric beneath draped shoulders. Dropped shoulders. plain back with centre-back opening extending into skirt seam. Wide bell-shaped lower sleeve gathered into close fitting upper section. Full skirt closely pleated all round waist. 3 deep flounces from hip to hem. maroon woollen braid protecting hem of skirt. Pocket in right-hand seam beneath upper flounce. Piped hems. Trimmings - Bodice and sleeve edges trimmed bronze silk fringe. Fastenings - 15 steel hooks and worked eyelets centre-back, small white button at neck. Alterations - Bodice front has been widened with extension to lining beneath draped front.
