Summary

Dress - A woman's muslin and silk dress dating from the late 1830's. Fabric - White muslin, with woven stripe of cream silk. Block printed with a design of flower sprays in pink, yellow and green on a green/ black spotted ground, 25 inch / 63.5 cms width. Lining - Bodice lined with firm white cotton. Bodice boned centre-back and sides, sleeve tops lined with glazed muslin. Cut - Waistline slightly higher than natural. Wide 'v' neckline. The bodice front is cut in 2 pieces on the bias, the right-hand piece 'crosses' the left-hand piece below the neckline. Both sides draped across top, the fullness held into very neat pleats by lines of stitching and piped 2 satin bars near shoulder. Plain bodice back with higher neckline and curved seams. Centre-back opening extends into skirt seam. Narrow, curved, full length sleeves, set rather low. Richly decorated from shoulder to elbow with pleating and ruching. Set-in waistband. Skirt gathered all round waist - tie stitched. Deep false hem of muslin. Seams piped with cream stain. Beautifully made. Fastenings - 9 flattened brass hooks centre-back, with matching eyes. 2 missing - replaced with other kinds of eyes. Alterations - Skirt appears to have been remade.(cf Nancy Bradfield 'Costume in Detail' p169). Charles Wade Catalogue No. G.18 - 'Frock. White muslin - printed with rose design, with cream silk stripe.' Bought of Miss Millard for 15/-. (female)
