Summary
Dress - A woman's wool and satin dress, from the 1850's. Fabric - Plum coloured printed woollen lawn with satin stripe; self-woven plaid. All over design of rosebuds and foliage. Lining - Bodice and sleeves lined with white cotton (robably re-used from another garment). White cotton inner sleeves. Cut - Low waist with deep point at front. Bodice front has centre seam with 3 darts fanning out to either side from the waist. Centre-seam, darts and side seams all boned (1 missing). Strip of self fabric, wide over the shoulder, narrowing toward the centre waist. Round neckline. Short opening centre-front. Plain back with centre-back opening extending some way into skirt. Long bell shaped sleeves, the opening pointed back and front. Full skirt, organ pleated all round waist, 2 deep flounced en disposition. Remains of stitching line 10 inches / 25.3 cms above suggests a third flounce, now missing. Large pocket at knee level in right hand seam. Small fob pocket to left of centre-front waist. Piped seams. Cotton tab inside point of waist - for pinning to stays. Trimmings - Silk fringe of purple/brown/grey edging sleeves and bodice front decoration. Fastenings - 17 painted steel wire hooks centre-back, with 1 steel eye at waist. 15 worked eyelets and 1 worked bar at neck, 4 steel hooks on centre-front opening with worked bars. (Cross.Ref.
