Summary
Pelerine - Part of a woman's wool and silk dress, sleeves and pelerine from the early 1840's. Fabric - Cream wool with silk stripe. Printed in red and green with a design of nasturtium-like flowers and trailing stems (steam process for printing on wool) fabric 31 inches / 78.8 cms in width. Lining - Bodice lined with cream cotton. Sleeves and pelerine lined with glazed cotton. Cut - Natural waistline with point wide 'v' neckline fitted bodice shaped by 2 darts wither side of centre seam, boned at centre-front and sides (centre-front bone missing). Folded bands of green satin alternating with self-fabric run from tip of shoulder to centre point at waist. Stomacher-shaped centre panel decdorated with cord and rosettes. Centre-back opening continues into skirt. Back of bodice plain, shaped with curved seams. Set-in elbow-lenght sleeve ending in 2 deep scalloped frills. Full skirt, more closely gathered at back. Right-hand pocket slit. Detachable sleeves, slight fullness at top, narrowing into fastened cuff. Pelerine falling to the waist at the back has gently curving seams over the shoulder. Tab inside back for pinning to dress waist. Piped seams. Evidence of pinning at top of detachable sleeves. Trimmings - Edge of sleeves and pelerine trimmed green cord fringe. Green cord criss-cross the centre panel of the bodice and outlines the waist. 3 green rosettes centre-front bodice and 3 on each sleeve. Green cord round neck edge of pelerine for fastening with 2 long slender green silk tassels. Fastenings - Dress originally fastened with 9 hooks and worked eyelets (hooks now missing). 4 sets of tape ties added later. 2 flattened brass hooks and worked bars on each cuff. Alterations - The bodice waistline has been taken in by 2 darts centre-front, the skirt has then been clumsily re-set and shortened with a tuck above the hem. Possibly fancy dress.
