Summary
Dress - 1830 (circa) cotton dress. Fabric - White muslin with woven check 34 inches/ 86.4 cm wide. Roller and block-printed, with a multicoloured design of trailing stems and sprays of flowers. Lining - Bodice lined with white cotton. Sleeves, collar and hem lined white muslin. Inset waistband strengthened with wide linen tape. Cut - Natural waistline. Shallow 'v' neckline. Bodice front has centre seam and a dart over the bust. A band of self-fabric is gathered at the shoulder and lies in soft folds across the bodice to be pinned onto waistband centre-front (left-hand band now missing). Large cape collar falls over the shoulders and the back. The bodice back is fitted with seams curving from the amrhole. Centre-back opening extends a short way into the skirt. 'Imbecile' sleeves with tight cuffs. The fullness of the sleeve is held with a line of chain stitching just above the cuff. The skirt is very full - organ pleated all round to the waistband. Hem is stiffened with double layer of starched muslin. 2 pocket slits. Seams and edges of bodice and sleeves are piped. Bodice front is bias-cut. Basting thread of blue cotton still in position inside bodice. very neatly sewn throughout. Fastenings - 6 small round wire hooks and hand worked eyes centre-back. 2 large round wire hooks and eyes at waist. 3 tape ties inside each sleeve head to attach sleeve puffs. 2 small mother-of-pearl buttons on each cuff with tape loops.
