Summary
Dress - An early 19th century (1825) cream muslin dress with woven check of thicker warp and weft threads. Block printed in purple (now changed to brown), with all-over spot design of star-like flowers. Lining - Bodice lining and inner sleeves of white cotton. Cut - 'Low Stomacher' front (see Cunnington 'Handbook of English Costume' p355) with waistline only slightly above the natural waist. Bodice opnes centre front with close-fitting neckline. The front shaped with long darts to the bust. The back has diamond shaped central panel with piped seams. Long sleeves, the head gathered more fully at the back. Underarm gusset. Short undersleeves. Sleeves gathered onto wristband; self frill. front section of skirt falls smoothly, the back section tightly gathered at centre. Slightly flared at hem. Fastenings - No fastenings on bodice (possibly it was pinned). Front section of skirt has linen ties which cross at back through hand-worked loop, then tie at front.
