Summary
Dress - An early 19th century (1815-1820) white muslin dress with stripes of a thicker warp-thread (dimity). Block printed in purple with all over spot design of a stylised flower. Printed border at hem, of dotted lines and larger flowers with edging, simulating Vandyke lace. Lining - Bodice white cotton. Sleeves lined with soft muslin. Hem faced with white cotton. Cut - High waisted, back fastening. Close fitting neckline. Front pieces of bodice cut on bias. Seamed at centre; darts at bust; shoulder seam well down back; side seams also slanted, giving diamond shape to the back. Double self-frill at neck. Bodice seams piped. Full length sleeves, full at head, partly gathered onto buttoned band at wrist, with small frill below band. Skirt falling smoothly at front, tightly gathered at back. Opening extends down centre-back seam. Pocket slit on righ-hand side. Small gores in side seams at hem. 25 mm wide pleat centre-front, stitched from waist to hem. Fastenings - Linen tape ties at neck and waist back. Wrist band buttoned with linen-covered ring button. Cross reference Nancy Bradfield 'Costume in Detail' p102. (female)
