Summary
Dress - An early 19th century (c.1810) white muslin dress with a spot design of large discs surrounded by dots worked in heavy cotton thread, the discs having been worked in couching. Lining - Unlined. Cut - Open all the way down back. High waisted, darted bodice with very low neckline with drawstring. Seamed underarm. Low neck at back. Short, full set-in sleeves, gathered at head. Full length skirt whipped onto bodice, slight fullness at front, fuller at back. Trimmings - 4 rows of tucks at hem, 2 at edge of sleeve. Fastenings - Drawstrings ties back of neck. 4 button (now missing) and worked buttonholes centre back bodice. Alterations - Front bodice altered, neck edge seems to have been lowered, let out centre-front with triangular muslin piece. Run and fell underarm seams with double row of back stitch worked from outside. Unusual dress as it is open from neck to hem. Back opening has never been seamed. Possibly a dress for a large child.
