Summary
Dress - Late 18th century (c.1795) dress of plain white muslin. Lining - Unlined, waistband mounted onto stong white cotton tape. Cut - Very high waist. Back fastened. Wide square neckline at front, curved at back with 4 drawstrings. Bodice gathered at neck and waist, with 2 seams underarm. Full length skirt falling smoothly at front, gathered at back. Double ruffle at hem, possibly a pocket slit in right hand seam. Long sleeves, gathered at head, drawstring and frill at wrist outside of sleeve smocked with 2 rows of stitching, once above the wrist and again below the shoulder, echoing the line of the waist. Fastenings - 4 drawstrings at neck to tie at centre-back; drawstrings at wrist. Button at centre-back waist of linen-covered metal ring. Label - ELIZABETH DAVIS 1.2 1795' stamped inside waist.
