Summary
Petticoat - Made of stone white silk satin, quilted overall with matching thread. 0.125 inch (3 mm) band of bright green at selvedge. Lined with stone white silk. Interlined with fine wool. Average length 39 inches (990 mm). 8 panels each about 18 inches (455 mm) wide. Narrow (2.75 inches (70 mm) centre front panel, with knife pleats of varying depth, facing backwards to the centre back. Waistband of 1 inch (25 mm) tape folded over the raw upper edge and extended at the back to form ties. The centre back slash opening is 11.5 inches (292 mm) deep. 8 inch (203 mm) pocket opening in the seam at each side from 2 inches (50 mm) below the waistband. The hem of the petticoat is faced with linen to a depth of 4 inches (100 mm). Quilted overall in running stitch. Wadded quilting is used for the back pattern, trapunto and Italian corded technques for the motifs and borders. The body of the quilting is in a diaper pattern, inset with four small squares; scattered floral motifs are set into this ground. The hem as a deep border 12 inches (305 mm) of stylized flowers and leaves, and a narrow wavy border with flowers and shell-like motifs. Several variations of the bround pattern occur in the borders.
