Summary
Dress; Open robe polonaise - Pastel yellow silk damask with spot background with small brocaded flower sprays. Bodice and sleeves lined with different weights of bleached linen. Bodice closed, fitted, with low scoop neck. Bodice front extended below waist, boned side front, back in 4 pieces, low point waist, each seam boned (each piece of bodice lined and finished before assembling). Sleeves straight, elbow length, bottom slanted to fit elbow. Skirt 6 widths, knife pleated to bodice all round. 2 pocket slits. Neck edge and skirt front timmed with pleated band of self fabric edge fly braid. Puff stuffed with fleece. Evidence of pinning inside back waist and 2 self covered button outside back waist for polonaise. 2 cotton tapes inside skirt - later addition. Unaltered. Paper label attached; 'This dress belonged to MIss Massey of Clanoraid Co. Limerick C1770' Cf Nancy Bradfield 'Costume in Detail' p. 57 and Janet Arnold 'Patterns of Fashion' p. 37 (female)
