Summary
Tool - Oak wheel and handle. Bolt with nut as axle. Wheel made of two semicircles joined. Hole in top of handle for a hanging loop. 'A wheelwright's traveller, a device used to measure the circumference of a wooden wheel and to transfer that measurement to a length of iron for the tyre' (M. Jessup). In his notebook recalling his memories of Yoxford (SNO.MISC.955) CPW recalls the village wheelwright’s workshop (page 6 onwards) he includes a detailed pen sketch of the interior (page 9) and included in the bottom right of the sketch is a wheelwright's traveller.
