Summary
Japanese carved and lacquered wooden saddle with leather seat pad. Wood carved with dragons, clouds and floral decoration. 2 securing straps pf pale leather each with a column of metal staples.Engraved signature underneath in Japanese characters 'Keishu horu'. Personal device, Kakihan, in black lacquer. 18th century. 'In a Higgler's shack near Scole Norfolk midst piles of old flat irons and rubbish of all sorts was found the pair of Japanese stirrups of iron inlaid with silver crests of Prince Arima. With these was a saddle of powdered gold lacquer with carved dragon saddle bows' (M. Jessup).
