Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Gentleman Gardener, signed Classen fecit d. 1669 (?). Portrait of a man, half length to right, shoulder length black wig, dressed in pink jacket with blue cravat and lace sleeves, and holding a spade in his left hand with inscribed motto 'Chi cultiva raccoglie'.[Reap what you sow] His right hand rests on a basket of flowers. [Johann Adam Classen, German garden designer fl.1726 -29] In notebook no.3, page 5 (1340945.3) Charles Wade refers to: 'Grey 1. Portrait in oils of a gentleman, half length, long curled wig, blue cravat, red belted coat with lace sleeves, hold basket of flowers & a spade which has inscription on shaft "Chi Cultura raccoglia"? James II period'.
