Summary
Oil painting on board, An Unknown Man, possibly Thomas Floss, aged 71, English School. Inscribed, painted in gold, top right: 'Ano 1627 Aet suae 71'. Top left: painted shield crest. Head and shoulders portrait of a bearded man, facing left. The sitter wears black robe with white collar and a large ruff. Black wooden frame with gold painted picture surround. Reverse of wooden boards joined with canvas strips, now behind modern Perspex cover, with two painted armorial shields. Paper label, written in ink: 'Mr. Thos. Flos of Fulham County of Middlesex from heralds office Noo (?) 1861.' Brass hanging loop in centre top of frame.

Given to the National Trust with Snowshill Manor in 1951 by Charles Paget Wade.
