Maria Timmis, Mrs Peter Lander (1789 - 1857)
Henry Smith Smith
With her unblinking stare, this oil portrait of Maria Timmis was the cause of a few childhood nightmares. Hanging at the top of the stairs, grandchildren visiting Sunnycroft would have to dash past her to their bedrooms in the dark; it’s no wonder she has earned the nickname ‘Scary Mary’.
Oil painting on canvas, Maria Timmis, Mrs Peter Lander (1789 - 1857) by Henry Smith Smith. A half-length portrait of a woman wearing a red dress, lacy bonnet and bodice and jewelled brooch, holding paint brush and flower painting.
Bequeathed to National Trust with Sunnycroft and its contents by Miss Joan Lander (1916 – 1997).
