Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Woman, British (English School), 1832-36. A three-quarter-length portrait of a middle-aged woman seated in a brown/red armchair, facing slightly towards the left. She wears a grey dress with gigot sleeves and a tippet of white lace which is fastened with two gold clasps. On her head she wears black curls around her face and a bonnet of white lace with a high semi-circular brim and ties hanging down to either side. Her grey dress is decorated at the waist and cuffs with gold ornaments. She holds white gloves in her right hand and a green book in her left which has the initials FD? and the date 18?? on the spine (question marks covered by her fingers). Signed lower left: ‘Jenny (or maybe Jeremy?) Baker 1838’
