Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Reverend Samuel Reichel (1787 - 1857), British (English) School, 19th century. A half-length portrait of an elderly, white-haired clergyman, seated in an armchair, who wears a black coat with a white cravat at the neck. He is turned slightly towards the right and looks out at the spectator. He holds a book with marbled boards in his left hand. Behind him to the left is a red curtain tied back with a red tasselled cord. To his right, a view through a window shows a landscape with mountains in the distance and a grey, stormy sky above. He was the father of Reverend Oswald Reichel (1840-1923) who purchased A La Ronde in 1880. Samuel Reichel was born in the USA, became a minister in the Moravian Church and died while at a Moravian Church conference in Germany.
