Summary
Oil painting on wood (artist's palette), 'Sitting for a Portrait', British School, mid-late 19th century. In this unusual work, the paint covers the entire surface of the palette. It shows a scene on the banks of a brook where a young man in black breeches and coat is sketching the likeness of a young woman sitting on the ground opposite. She wears a blue skirt and bodice over a white chemise and holds a white shawl over her left arm. Behind her is a wooden fence and to her right a bush. The young man holds a sketchbook on his lap and a pencil in his right hand. A wide-brimmed black hat rests on the bank to his left. The branches of a bush to his right arch upwards and connect with the thumb hole of the palette. A snow-capped mountain rises up in the far distance and the sky is mottled with lilac and pink tones.
