Summary
Oil painting on panel, Henry VIII (1491–1547), after Hans Holbein the younger (Augsburg 1497/8 - London 1543). A three-quarter-length portrait, facing, wearing a red surcoat with fur collar, a richly embroidered, jewelled and fur-trimmed doublet, a jewelled bonnet, and holding in the proper left hand a staff and in the proper right, brown leather gloves. Against a dark green background. A version of a portrait showing the king in later life, based on the 'final pattern' type after Hans Holbein. Several versions of the type exist, including: Penrhyn Castle, NT 1421756; Compton Verney, CVCSC : 0192.B; The Old Schools, University of Cambridge, acc.no. 6; Bethlehem Museum of the Mind, Beckhenham, Kent, acc.no.
