Summary description

Oil painting on canvas, Arabella Diana Cope, Duchess of Dorset (1769-1825) by Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun (Paris 1755 – Paris 1842), signed and dated 1803. A half-length portrait of a young woman, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, wearing a black velvet dress and white blouse, with curly brown hair showing beneath a red turban trimmed with a black ribbon and a large black ostrich feather.

Provenance

By descent at Knole; recorded in the 1828 inventory of Knole in the Little Dining Room / Blue Room (No.83); thence by descent; on loan from the Trustees of the Sackville Estate.
