Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Reputedly George Frederic Handel (1685-1759), aged 52 by Balthasar Denner (Althona 1685 – Rostock 1749), signed and dated: DENNER 1736 - invalidated. Inscribed on spandrels of frame: FREDERICK / HANDEL/ AETATIS.52 / OB.T 75. An oval half-length portrait of a man in a powdered wig, wearing a plum-coloured coat with a white waistcoat and white linen stock.

Acquired by Sir John Frederick Sackville, 3rd Duke of Dorset, KG (1745-1799) by 1778, by which date a Portrait of Handel Denner is listed in the account book as being in the London house; 1799 inv.: “Handall 2 Denner”, in The Dining Parlour; 1828 inv., Dining Room (no.44); on loan from the Trustees of the Sackville Estate
