Summary
Watercolour on ivory, James Daniell (1744-1802), by Richard Crosse (Knowle 1742 – Knowle 1810), circa 1787. An oval head and shoulders portrait of a man, facing right, with blue eyes, wearing a blue coat, a waistcoat with blue running stitch, white cravat and powdered wig; against a sky background. Within a jewelled frame. Formerly (and erroneously) catalogued as a portrait of Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgwater (1736-1803). Versions of this miniature were with Christie's, London, 3 June 2003, lot 117 and Sotheby's, London, 1958, lot 29; they are listed in Richard Crosse's Ledger, 20 March, 1787 at £37.16.0 (Long 1928, p. 78).
