Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Gentleman and his Son with a Parakeet, English School, circa 1700, previously attributed to Michael Dahl. A three-quarter-length portrait of father and son, father wearing long wig, brown coat and scarlet cloak draped over left arm, child standing in front in pale blue/silver coat, dove perched on left wrist. In the background a man-of-war in full sail, flying the Red Ensign is discernible.
Provenance
Probably acquired in 1890s by Theodore Mander (1853 -1900) (Visible in early photos of Great Parlour);in 1914 inventory as Michael Dahl; loaned to East Riddlesden Hall, Yorks, circa 1940; transferred to the National Trust on the death of Sir Geoffrey Le Mesurier Mander (1882-1962); returned Wightwick 1997
