Full description
Flora Macdonald Reid was a dedicated artist with a prolific output who exhibited regularly in shows across Britain and Europe, including in exhibitons in Edinburgh, Glasgow, London and Paris. Born in London to Scottish parents, she grew up in Edinburgh, and began exhibiting at the Royal Scottish Academy aged 16, as a result of her talent and dedication. Marketplaces are common settings for her paintings. Reid was preoccupied with the friendly exhanges, sharing of news and swapping stories that took place in these public spaces, with Bruges, a favourite setting for these works.
Provenance
Featured in a photograph c.1920 of Geoffrey Mander (who had inherited Wightwick from his father in 1900) Florence Mander and their children, Mavis, Meryn and Elizabeth in the Great Parlour at Wightwick Manor, it is therefore an artwork that was acquired for Wightwick prior to the major Pre-Raphaelite collection started in 1937. Transferred to the National Trust on the death of Sir Geoffrey Le Mesurier Mander (1882-1962)
