Summary
Oil painting on panel, How they met themselves by Henry Treffry Dunn (Truro 1838 - 1899), circa 1896-98.Based either on the ink drawing of 1860 (Surtees No. 118) or more probably on one of the watercolour replicas of 1861 (Surtees No. 118 R.. 1; both Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge) and 1864 (Surtees No. 118 R.. 2). The subject is the Doppelganger legend: the lovers meet their doubles (their outlines highlighted) in a wood at twilight, an omen of impending death. Rossetti first drew it in 1851. He referred to the 1860 version as "the Bogie pen and ink".
