Full description
A mahogany open armchair, British, manufactured and retailed by Morris & Co., circa 1875-1900. The square back flanked by armrests with protruding ends and with padded cushions, the padded square seat above a pair of splayed and rounded front legs and plain rounded rear legs, the legs joined by a H-stretcher and a single stretcher to the rear, upholstered in floral patterned blue fabric. The chair has since been reupholstered in 'Fritillary' which was a Wardle design in the style of Morris. The fabric on the chair was a gift from Wardle’s daughter in the 1960's.
Provenance
In 1937 Sir Geoffrey Mander and his wife Rosalie gifted Wightwick Manor, its contents and gardens to the National Trust. Sir Geoffrey and his family continued to occupy and manage Wightwick adding to the collection in collaboration with the National Trust. Sir Geoffrey died in 1962 but Lady Mander continued to live at Wightwick until her death in 1988. This chair is listed in the Wightwick Manor 1937 inventory.
