Summary
Plaster roundel showing a seated putto facing left with his back to the viewer, resting on a bundle of wheat sheaves, holding a scythe in his left hand, beneath which is a small depiction of a crab. The putto is a representation of summer, and the crab is the zodiac symbol for Cancer (June-July). This roundel forms part of a group of four reliefs depicting the seasons (see NT. 128692, 128700, 128704) originally designed c.1770-1790 for Eleanor Coade (1733-1821) to be reproduced in Coade stone, possibly by John Bacon (1740-1799). The Knole roundels all have an additional decorative foliate border around the top. This plaster cast is likely to have been made in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century.
Provenance
Probably acquired by Charles, 1st Earl Whitworth (1752-1825)
