Caption
This is a copy of the original in the Louvre. The King is shown in hunting attire, wearing a silver grey jacket with Garter ribbon, and scarlet breeches. Hunting was something the King enjoyed above all pleasures. The scene is probably set in one of the parks in which the King hunted, possibly Greenwich. The Astley family were supporters of the King during the Civil War. The View of Windsor Castle (now in the Dining Room at Seaton Delaval) was traditionally given to the family by Charles II in recognition of their support.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, King Charles I (1600-1649) in the Hunting Field, follower of Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - London 1641), ?17th-century. Full-length portrait of Charles I, facing left, hand on his left hip; to the right: a horse’s head, with two pages depicted behind; landscape in the background and vegetation to the left
Full description
A copy of the left-hand-side of the portrait in the Louvre (no.1236), with the body of the horse omitted; an early (?) copy (omitting much of the horse and foreground) is at Euston Hall; and another early copy is at Lamport Hall. There are a number of later copies, reductions, and derivations, including one at Lacock. The King is shown in hunting attire, wearing a silver grey jacket with Garter ribbon, and scarlet breeches. Hunting was something the King enjoyed above all pleasures, and to which he devoted himself throughout the year (see O. Millar in Van Dyck. A Complete Catalogue of the Paintings, New Haven & London, 2004, IV.50, pp.466-68). The scene is probably set in one of the parks in which the King hunted – given the suggestion of an estuary in the background, Greenwich was suggested by Millar in op.cit.supra. The Astley family were supporters of the King during the Civil War. The View of Windsor Castle (now in the Dining Room at Seaton Delaval) was traditionally given to the family by Charles II in recognition of their support.
