Caption

This sitter was the son of Sir Edward Astley, 4th Bt. (1729 – 1802) and his first wife, Rhoda Delaval (1725 – 1757). He married Hester Browne (d.1855), daughter of Samuel Browne on 14th January 1789 at St. Margaret’s Church, Lynn, Norfolk, who bore him seven children: four daughters and three sons. He was M.P. for Norfolk between November 1797 and 1817. He was succeeded by his son, Sir Jacob, 6th Bt., 16th Baron Hastings (1797 – 1859). The artist, Benjamin Burnell, was a painter of architectural views, who entered the RA as an architectural student, but changed to painting.
