Oil painting on panel, An Unknown Old Man, manner of Jusepe de Ribera (Jativa 1591 – Margellina 1652), English imitation of 17th century Venetian, possibly Girolamo Forabosco or Pietro Bellotti. A head-and-shoulder portrait painting of a bearded old man, almost profile to the left, looking downwards, wearing dark clothing, index finger of left hand to his lips.
Provenance
Transferred to the National Trust with Shugborough’s park and contents of the state rooms, in part-payment of death-duties to the Treasury, following the death of Thomas, 4th Earl of Lichfield (1883 - 1960)
