Summary
Oil painting on canvas, 'Elis' ridden by J. Day by John Frederick Herring the elder (Surrey 1795 – Meopham, Kent 1865), signed and dated: J. F. Herring 1836. Equestrian portrait of the Elis, a chestnut horse, foaled in 1833, in a landscape, standing in profile to the right, with J.Day up. The winner of the St.Leger in 1836. Not actually owned by Lord Lichfield but was trained in his stablesat Goodwood.
Provenance
Transferred to the National Trust with Shugborough’s park and contents of the state rooms, in part-payment of death-duties to the Treasury, following the death of Thomas, 4th Earl of Lichfield (1883 - 1960)
