Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Admiral, Sir Charles Saunders (1713 – 1775), by W. Drown (restorer/copyist), 1931, after original by Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA (Plympton 1723 - London 1792), 1760-1765. A three-quarter-length portrait, turned slightly to the right, looking to the left, powdered wig, wearing naval uniform and the Order of the Bath, leaning against an anchor. A modern copy of the original by Reynolds in 1765, which was once at Shugborough and is now in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.
Provenance
Painted in 1931 when original painting sold; transferred to the National Trust with Shugborough’s park and contents of the state rooms, in part-payment of death-duties to the Treasury, following the death of Thomas, 4th Earl of Lichfield (1883 - 1960)
