Summary
Oil painting on panel (three boards), An Unknown Man, aged 78 (once said to be of the Gilly Family; possibly Sir James Altham, d. 1617), British (English) School, inscribed in later script: top left: ANÕ DOÑI 1617 top right: ÆTATIS SVÆ. 78:. A half-length portrait of an elderly man, turned to the left, moustache and long spade beard, wearing tall black hat with a wide brim, a black coat edged with fur down the front, a high ruff and carrying in his left hand a glove, a ring on his little finger.

first recorded (as an 'Alderman') in 1731; bequeathed by (Henry John) Ralph Bankes (1902 – 1981) to the National Trust, together with the estates of Corfe Castle and Kingston Lacy and its entire contents, 1981
