Summary
Oil painting on canvas laid down on panel, Cardinal Gaspar de Borja y Velasco (1582-1645), after Diego Velázquez (Seville 1599 - Madrid 1660). A bust-length portrait of a member of a family whose heads were Dukes of Grandia but who are better known in their Italian manifestation as Borgias. He is turned three-quarters to left, head slightly turned to spectator, gazing at spectator, wearing a brown coat and biretta which may once have appeared red (suggested by the glazes in the shadows). He was Cardinal-Protector of the Spanish Crown in Rome from 1611 to 1632, when forced to withdaw beacuse of his opposition to Pope Urban VIII.Thereafter Archbishop of Milan, Seville and Toledo (1643-5), when he was painted by Velázquez.
