Caption
This is an example from the sets of female saints produced by Zurbaran and his studio in Seville in the early 1630s. St Justa, a Christian martyr, is usually paired with St Rufina, both patron saints of that city. They were daughters of a potter there, martyred for refusing to allow their father’s vessels to be used in the worship of Venus. They also destroyed the image of the goddess in the temple. Wearing a beautiful pale mauve, against a plain dark background typical of the series, here St Justa is holding two of the jugs. It was bought by William Bankes (1786–1855) for Kingston Lacy in Spain in 1814.
