Caption
Joris van Son’s still-lifes almost always include fruit, of which some is often imported and exotic. The items depicted here – in particular, the pears, grapes and corn – all have a distinctly autumnal feel, perhaps with the exception of the late-season strawberries. The fruit and vegetables are suspended by a blue ribbon and are set within a fictive architectural niche, which serves to contain and highlight the arrangement. The high level of realism (note the veins in the ivy and the judicious highlights on the shiny exoskeleton of the beetle) disguises and compensates for the underlying artifice of the composition. This painting was recorded at Kingston Lacy as early as 1659 and was bought for as little as £3.10s. Signed and dated 1654
