Summary
Oil painting on canvas, King Charles I (1600-1649), after Sir Anthony van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - London 1641). A three-quarter length portrait, seated, turned to right, wearing the Order of the Garter, his left hand resting on an orb, his right holding a sceptre. No original of this composition is known to exist. It would appear to be the creation by the Studio of a formal seated three-quarter-length, based on the face-mask and dress of the head-and-shoulders portrait that belonged to Prince Rupert and is now at Chequers. Companion picture to Henrietta Maria after Sir Anthony Van Dyck, KLA.P.60
