Caption
The shepherds have come to adore the baby Jesus lying in the manger. The Virgin clasps her hands together in prayer and Joseph sits onlooking on the left. A pair of putto-angels hover above holding a scroll, probably quoting the words sung by the multitude of angels that appeared to the shepherds: Glory to God in the highest. This is an adapted copy of the octagonal painting formerly at Houghton Hall in Norfolk, and now in the Pushkin Museum, Moscow.
