Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Margaret Wynne, Mrs Henry I Bankes (1724-1822) and her daughter, Anne Bankes (1759-1778), as a child, by Richard Roper (c.1730 – c.1775), signed and dated 1764 on the back. Two half-length portraits, Mrs Bankes to left and Anne Bankes as a child to right. Mrs Bankes turned three-quarters to right, looking into the distance, winged lace head-dress rests on top of her hair, wearing a dress with an elaborate lace collar which emerges from a pearl choker necklace and falls in front to the top of her bodice, she also wears a collared cloak edged with lace; in her right hand which rests on a covered ledge, she holds a long-stemmed rose. Anne Bankes is turned three-quarters to left, looking into the distance she wears a small spray of flowers in her hair above her forehead and also holds the rose with her left hand. The background has a balastrade with ornamental covered urn to the right, in a landscape setting.
