Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Charles Brune of Athelhampton (1630/1 - c.1703) by Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 - London 1680), circa 1660/65. Three-quarter length, turned to left, slightly facing in a landscape, wearing a black mantle, his right hand supported on a rocky ledge holding a drapery to his chest, his left hand on his thigh. Charles Brune (1630/1 - c.1703) was the uncle of Mary Brune (c.1646 - 1711), the daughter and heir of his brother John Brune (1622 - 1645) of Athelhampton who, in 1661, married Sir Ralph Bankes (1631 - 1677).

Probably commissioned by Sir Ralph Bankes, MP (?1631-1677), the husband of the sitter's niece; recorded 1731, no.72; 1762 inventory, no. 59, as 'Charles Brune Esq., uncle of Lady Bankes, wife of Sir Ralph Bankes and Grandfather of the present Charles'; bequeathed by (Henry John) Ralph Bankes (1902 – 1981) to the National Trust, together with the estates of Corfe Castle and Kingston Lacy and its entire contents in 1981
