Summary
Sculpture, alabaster; a winged putto doing handstands; Italian; c. 1850-1900. A small alabaster figure of a winged boy doing a handstand, on a rectangular base.
Full description
A small alabaster figure of a young winged boy or putto, doing a handstand. Mounted on a rectangular base. The little figure is one of a group of small alabaster sculptures at Cragside, some of which are reproductions of well-known antique or more modern sculptures. Made for the tourist trade, this figure and another of a boy weeping (NT 1231024) seem to be generically derived from the figures of small children created by the Flemish-born sculptor François Duquesnoy (1597-1643), who lived and worked in Rome for most of his career. His putti became immensely popular and were much reproduced and adapted by other artists over the following two centuries. Jeremy Warren April 2022

Armstrong collection. Transferred by the Treasury to The National Trust in 1977 via the National Land Fund, aided by 3rd Baron Armstrong of Bamburgh and Cragside (1919 - 1987).
