Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Roughtin Brig, Parish of Iron-gray, near Dumfries, by Thomas Miles Richardson the elder (Newcastle-upon-Tyne 1784 – Newcastle-upon-Tyne 1848), signed and inscribed on the reverse, circa 1832. A rocky river scene with a waterfall and a figure on the bridge watching a heron on the pool below. Exhibited at the British Institution, 1832, no. 316 (The Roughtin Brig near Dumfries, 4ft x 3 ft 6 in.) [reference supplied by Martin Hopkinson].

Purchased by William George Armstrong, 1st Baron Armstrong of Cragside (1810-1900), from Mr Mather of Newcastle in 1865; recorded at Cragside by E. Rimbault Dibdin, ‘Lord Armstrong’s Collection of Modern Pictures. II.’, in The Magazine of Art, April 1891; thence by descent; the Armstrong Family Collection, Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland; sold by direction of Francis Watson-Armstrong and bought by the National Trust for Cragside at auction from Anderson and Garland Ltd, Newcastle, 28th September 2004, lot 508.
